OFW Dies in ICU
An OFW died in Chang Bing Show Chwan Memorial Hospital (Lukang Branch) ICU yesterday at 19:20.
Edmund, 29, was a close friend and used to work in Caogang, Lukang town, Changhua county. He died of vehicular accident.
Tuesday, June 19, 2007 (that was a Dragon Boat Festival). He and a fellow OFW went to the said hospital to visit a friend who was admitted there and then left to see yours truly to join me and family in watching the Dragon Boat Race that was very near the hospital. I last talked to him on the phone at around 4PM. Several minutes passed and no Edmund showed up so we decided to go back home to clean up, change our clothes then go to the barbecue party in Caogang that was intended as his "despedida party" because his contract was going to end on July 6. As we were about to leave our apartment, I got a call from a friend informing me that the motorcycle Edmund was driving hit a car on an intersection on their way to the race so we rushed to the accident scene then went to the emergency room to see him. His helmet was not locked so it flew as his face hit the car. The other OFW was wearing a full face helmet and it was securely fastened so he only hurt his arms and legs, no internal damage. The doctors said Edmund's head and brain were badly injured and doing the surgery on him is just to save his life. After talking to his wife in Hsinchu, we signed the consent papers right away so they can operate on him.
They put him in ICU after the surgery and never woke up since then. He gave up at the 10th day of his suffering. The doctors said he was really fighting death that he stayed that long. They expected him to go by the third day.
His body was transferred to Taichung morgue while his repatriation papers are being processed. MECO said it will probably take at least 10 days to have things done. Should you wish to help in any way, you may contact Joy of TambayansaTaiwan at 0921-481804, his wife Lorna at 0972-372646, his brother Edgar at 0922-059035 or MECO Taichung.
Let's pray that his soul may rest in peace and may this warn OFW's who are not allowed to drive motorcycles here in Taiwan. If you're allowed to drive, then be extra careful. Driving motorcycles here in Taiwan is one of the deadliest thing you'll ever do.
